Both on original broadcast and on re-reading, I found Dr Bowes' talk interesting and thought provoking.
I share the sense of awe at the view from the Hubble telescope and, as a teenager, I also had a genuinely religious experience of the wonder of creation.
But, like Wordsworth at Tintern Abbey,
I have learned
To look on nature, not as in the hour
of thoughtless youth; but hearing oftentimes
The still, sad music of humanity,
Nor harsh, nor grating, though of ample power
To chasten and subdue.
"The still, sad music of humanity" includes cancer and tsunamis and, especially relevant in this context, people who used to be described as "criminally insane".
Is our awe of the beauty of our Universe circumscribed? |
